Conteisa, which in Piedmontese dialect means "dispute", is a wine with which the pioneering Piedmontese winemaker, Angelo Gaja, pays homage to the dispute that took place in 1275 between the municipalities of La Morra and Barolo for the possession of the area of Cerequio. Almost all the vineyards from which this wine is produced are located in these territories with a predominantly southern exposure of the rows, located in the Cerequio cru of the same name.
In 1988 the Gaja family purchased twelve hectares of vineyard in one of the best positions in Serralunga. The land was named Sperss, a Piedmontese dialect word meaning nostalgia, that of Giovanni Gaja (Angelo’s father) for the childhood memories linked with Serralunga.
Conteisa di Gaja is ruby red with garnet reflections.
The nose expresses a remarkable intensity due to balsamic notes of licorice, spices, toasted nuances of cocoa, tobacco and red forest fruits, such as blackberries and blueberries.
When tasting, the wine appears warm and imposing, with lively but balanced tannins and a very long finish.
