In the local dialect, Sorì refers to the hillside facing south, while San Lorenzo is the patron saint protecting Alba’s Cathedral, as the vineyard was church property until 1964 when it was purchased by the Gaja family.

The Sorì San Lorenzo vineyard is situated in the municipality of Barbaresco, a few steps from the old town center. The land, facing south, consists of clayey-calcareous marls and covers a surface of 3.38 hectares, with an average altitude of 250 m above sea level. The vines are 50 years old on average.

Nebbiolo is the grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Angelo Gaja is Italy`s most renowned and dynamic wine personality and his impact on wine production in the last 30 years cannot be overestimated. Angelo Gaja took over the family business in 1970 and, as he says: "The challenge was to maintain the basic power and depth of Nebbiolo while polishing the wines to give them richer color, fuller fruit, better balance and a more refined style."

Sweet notes on the nose with a beautiful structure of fruit tannins with a lovely, intense color. It is closed initially but when it opens, it has a striking, multifaceted, dense texture.

The cask aging also gives the wine a great edge, a little more verve, and tension with notes of salinity, citrus, cassis, currants, mustard, smokiness, and licorice. A deeply complex wine.
